Thanks for this interview. I just finished reading this novel, and found it fascinating. I’d be interested to hear more about how much of the personal stories and relationships given to the protagonist (Hettie) are based on Denise Austin’s real life, and how much of that was fictional. I’d also love to know more about the real life of the zoo director who the character Mr. Write was based on. Thanks!

That’s terrific. You must keep us posted about Rod’s book. Creamer’s feat seems quite daunting and incredible. I’ll be interested to buy a copy once it comes out. My husband is also interested in sailing history … and he mentions Joshua Slocum’s 1899 book Sailing Alone Around the World … which Rod likely knows about. Good luck to Rod in his writing & researching endeavors …

In reply to Susan. Hi, Susan. To answer your questions, Marv Creamer took his voyage in late 1982 and finished in May 1984. He did have a small crew, but it was quite a feat (and not one I would enjoy at all!). My husband has sailed, but he's not a blue water sailor. I told him about Nichols book, which he wasn't aware of, so thank you! Rod's book is under contract and should be published sometime next spring. I'll keep you posted!

Thanks Lesley, I really appreciate your thoughts on the post & book. It was cool for me to learn about the making of Walsh’s novel. And interesting to hear about your husband’s book & research. I’m curious to hear what year this daunting circumnavigation took place … I did read & review one such sailing (1968) journey book called A Voyage for Madmen by Peter Nichols … perhaps your husband knows that one. I wish your husband much success with writing his book! Is he a big sailor? It seems awesome to write such a book.

What a fascinating story and a wonderful interview! I always love reading about an author’s process and inspiration to their books. My husband is in the middle of writing a nonfiction book about a man who circumnavigated the globe in a 36′ sailboat without any instruments. He has done a lot of research and has interviewed several crew members and it’s been fun to hear all about it as he has been writing. I’ll have to look for a copy of The Elephant of Belfast. Thanks for such a good recommendation!
