Oh thanks Ti. I'm glad you liked this one too. It seems to reach beyond baseball but still be about it too. Many facets to an entertaining story.

Great review. Thanks for sharing it with me in one of your recent comments. I didn't expect to love it so I was totally taken off guard by it. I like baseball well enough but don't know the game all that well. That didn't stop me from enjoying the book though (thankfully). I never even considered this to be a debut for the author. It seemed so polished and well done.

I have only the vaguest memories of the Big Red Machine, having been very young during their heydey, but there's something magical about Johnny Bench for me still. I enjoyed this book so much, too, and my husband just got a copy to start reading. He is an avid baseball fan, so I think he'll enjoy it thoroughly. It was nice to have him to be able to consult while I read The Art of Fielding. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

this novel doesn't get too bogged down on baseball --- so you'll likely be okay

I've heard so many great things about this book, but I'm not really a fan of baseball. I'll just have to keep reminding myself that it's a novel, not a baseball game. :) And really, it's not as if I dislike the sport, I just usually don't have the patience to watch for very long.

My husband was interviewing someone a while ago and asked her the question:what are you reading? Her answer was, oh, a novel a friend of mine wrote that will be published soon. Of course, it was The Art of Fielding! His 6 degrees of separation moment!

Go for it -- before another misfortune blotches it for good! Albeit, it's not a good one for lugging.

I scored an ARC of this and then my daughter promptly dropped a bottle of water on it while in the car and did not tell me. I found it days later, all rippled and ruined. I can still read it... it's not that bad now but lugging it around in the state it is in has not happened yet. I should just get it read, no?

I've noticed this book around, and because I'm not a fan of baseball, had opted not to add it to my list. However, your thoughts now motivate me to take a second look.
