Our October has been pretty sucky weatherwise so far. From Oct 3 – October 6, the high was 88 every day except on the 4th when it was 95. Way higher temperatures than before in October in this area, I have heard. Today is better and we actually took a short walk in the morning. We don’t have air conditioning so not much relief from it. It is uncomfortable, but the worst thing is feeling fatigued all the time. In LA and San Diego, I have heard that it was worse, up to 100 degrees?

So, concentrating on books instead, all of your bookish activities in October sound good. Most of the books you mention are new to me, but I will be waiting to see what you think of them. I have two books by Yiyun Li that I was planning to read in the summer (Wednesday’s Child, and Things in Nature Merely Grow), but I kept putting them off because I thought that they would be depressing and I wasn’t up to that at the time.

I will also be curious to see what you think of The Social Reckoning. Most of what I have heard about the film recently was negative and I was surprised. We never see movies at theaters, so we will have to stream it sometime if we want to see it.

Now that my Red Sox have let down all of New England, I guess it’s time to get some use out of my Netflix account so I plan to watch East of Eden. I am also looking forward to Sense & Sensibility.

Fatherland is the one from your list I’d go and see, Thomas Mann’s 1949 trip back to a Germany in ruins sounds like a film worth making, and with Sandra Hüller it should be good. Funny detail that it’s a daughter in the film and his wife in real life. Have a great time at Wordfest.

You sure do take some lovely photographs, Susan! Those fields remind me of eastern Washington near Walla Walla. Yes, it is getting darker earlier, and I’ve been feeling sleepy a lot during the afternoons.

The book festival sounds like great fun. I hope you enjoy hearing some of those authors speak. The Barbara Kingsolver event will be wonderful, I’m sure! Love the Bay Area, too. Even though it’s at the end of October, it could still be pretty warm. I know it’s very hot in L.A. right now. 100+ at Dodger stadium this past weekend! Ugh.

Yeah, I don’t want to know too much about Partita (a title that confounds me every time I see it!).

I’ve not read Julie Orringer, but her name sounded familiar. She wrote The Invisible Bridge, which I had on my TBR shelf for at least a decade or so. Couldn’t get into it, but Luna, Phoenix, Queen sounds appealing. Especially with the dog!

I’m tempted to watch East of Eden. I watched to 1955 film, which I didn’t care for, but maybe this new version will be better. The book is fantastic. The Social Reckoning looks very good. I think we saw The Social Network, but I’m not certain. Hmmm.

Enjoy the month. We’re off to Washington a week from Wednesday. Spending a few days on Whidbey Island, then over to Port Townsend. Cannon Beach for a couple of nights on our return south. Looking forward to seeing some fall colors.

The rainbow picture is so beautiful! Kudos to you for taking that. This month is packed with goodies all over. I have Partita on hold at the library, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get to it this year. I’m also interested in Music Against the Night. I read an amazing review of the East of Eden series. They praised the acting, how gorgeous it is, how faithful to the source material, plus Kazan’s directing. It seems Florence Pugh gives a career-defining performance. I so want to watch it.
