Yeah, the sex. I was surprised that Obama said it was his favorite book when it has so much sex in it. I’m surprised that one of his opponents didn’t say something about him being depraved for liking it. (I don’t think he’s depraved.) Of course, it’s probably because none of them have read it. I liked Lotto’s section okay but I really started getting into it once it changed to Mathilde’s perspective. Holy smokes!

In reply to John Wright. I'll be curious to see if you like H Is for Hawk since you follow birds closely. (Let me know.) Sarah seems to have liked it quite a bit. I'm not sure when I'll get to it, but hopefully this year. Perhaps it would make a good book club book for my group to discuss.

Yeah I can see Sarah where Fates & Furies would or could be disappointing to many. Both characters are not really what you want them to be. I was hoping for more out of Mathilde too. The book conjures up feminist issues — especially at the conference they go to where Lotto acts like an ass — it rebukes them a bit there but perhaps not strongly enough throughout the story. I’m still thinking about this novel and what the whole point of it was … to discuss the pitfalls of marriage? the miscommunication between spouses? how men & women fall short with one another?

As much as I admired the writing, character development and exploration of creativity, I was disappointed by Fates & Furies. I was waiting for the female perspective as a feminist rebuke, but instead it was Gone Girl style literary smut. The whole concept felt pretentious. The only plus is that a woman author is in the spotlight.

I enjoyed your reviews and thanks for reminding me to see Eye in the Sky.

Ha Carmen, good point about 45 Years. The TV cast of MI5 did change quite a bit over the years. And I did get attached to some characters a lot more than others. I’m sure we didn’t get to see the entire 9 seasons of it — but I wouldn’t mind trying to find it again. The movie has one of the same actors in it as the TV series — Peter Firth who stars as the boss Harry Pearce in both. Hmm.

Thanks Judy. Yeah I usually need quite a break between artist/musician memoirs. Now I’m good for awhile. Fates & Furies was pretty epic. Now I’m on a flight tomorrow for my dad’s retirement party in Calif. I love plane reading — maybe I’ll try The Girls novel. Enjoy your week. (I’ll be flying into Palm Springs … is it still 120F out there? Ouch.)
