Hi Jane, great to know you enjoyed the Alcaraz matches. Me too. He's a gazelle on the court, so fun to watch all his shots. Winning both the French Open and then Wimbledon, he's a dominant force in men's tennis.
Yeah I like the DC location of The Briar Club during that era ... so I'm game for it too. I hope you have a great July. Happy reading!

I love the premise of The Briar Club, and Kate Quinn is usually pretty good, so that's on my list. Long Island Compromise is intriguing--like you, not a funny situation, but who knows.

In reply to <a href="https://www.thecuecard.com/top-picks/july-preview-6/#comment-31445">Constance</a>.

Hi Constance, I like your take on the tennis. Emma Navarro has a good variety in her game so I like watching her play. I think she will win a grand slam one day. The women's semifinals yesterday were fantastic -- very close long matches!
You might get to the Quinn book before me -- so you can vet it for us. I'm interested in its setting. And interesting to hear about the real-life case that Taffy based her book on. I don't recall that case but I hold out hope it'll be an enjoyable read.
I guess Long Bright River was depressing -- looking back on it ... though somehow I got attached to the protagonist Mickey and whether she'd be able to rise above pretty gritty circumstances ... with her sister & everything else. I wonder if her new book will be as dark as that one. Hmm. I probably won't get to it until August. Enjoy your July! And happy reading.

I thought Long Bright River was good, although depressing, and full of people sleeping with the wrong people, as I recall.

Taffy B-A and her books don't really appeal to me but I did get drawn into an article she wrote for the NYT Magazine a few days ago about the Long Island man whose kidnapping inspired her book. I vaguely remember it happening - he was just snatched from his driveway, but he was a fairly ordinary man, affluent but not ostentatious.

I am on the waiting list for the Kate Quinn book but will probably buy it this weekend as I know my sisters and mother will also be interested in it.

I don't play but I am a big tennis fan; however, had really been too busy to watch it on TV the last couple years. I was quite startled to turn on Wimbledon last weekend and have the #1 player be an Italian (with a German name) I had never heard of. I enjoyed watching him and was annoyed when he lost. I was also disappointed when Emma Navarro lost. I didn't like the way the media portrayed her as being from a rich family. Yes, it definitely helps to have the best coaching, parents who can drive you everywhere, great equipment, etc. but you still have to work very hard to get to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.

Hi Judith, good to hear. Yay ... that will be wonderful to hear Liz Moore speak about her book. You will be our best judge if the novel is thee One of the summer since it's set there in the Adirondacks. I think I might get to her book in August. How long is your drive to the bookstore there? In that area, I've only been to Albany, NY and the Green Mountains of NH. I hope you are having a good summer and the heat wave has passed. Things are toasty here too.
Enjoy your reading.

Hi Rachel, thanks the rainbow was a rare sight! I think The God of the Woods will be the ticket this summer. But I might not get to it till August. I will try out Lady in the Lake. Black Swan was crazy! Lol. Enjoy your July ... and your beautiful yard/garden & roses!

Hi Deb, sorry to hear of the devastation of Beryl. ugh. That's a mess indeed. Hope your area is able to recover.
I'd like to read Stephen Carter sometime. Seems he has some good novels. And I wish his novel & TV series adaptation was on a channel I got. Hmm.
Good luck with the week. I guess it's almost the weekend again. Where does time fly?

So interested that you've highlighted The God of the Woods! And coincidentally, I am meeting Liz Moore tonight at Northshire Bookstore in Saratoga Springs where she'll be speaking. I'm so glad that this novel has had glowing reviews absolutely everywhere. Like you, I think it will be THE BOOK of the summer, and as it's set in the Adirondacks, it will certainly be a top pick in my neck of the woods.

Look at that beautiful rainbow! Hope you enjoy the tennis tournaments. The God of the Woods sounds like my kind of read! Black Swan never appealed to me. It did look a bit crazy and I'm not one for wonky shows, but Lady in the Lake looks good!

I'm a huge fan of Stephen L. Carter's nonfiction book, Civility. It would certainly be a good time to reissue this book. I can think of a few politicians would should read it!

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on the latest releases. I'm making notes about the titles you have shared. Sorry to be so late to the party...just trying to get back to blogging after cleaning up the mess Beryl left us.
